In the house I grew up in, there was a singular rose bush that grew from under the house. It was sparse, thorny and grew in an unusually tough area for a rose to flourish. Unlike most rose bushes that flower in numbers this bush would only produce one red rose every spring. Why would it only grow one? The depth of its petal was the colour of velvet blood and the scent an intoxicating hit that would punch you right in the nose.
